Delta Brain Waves and How They Relate to the Deep Sleep Stage and Sleep

If you’ve ever wondered what NuCalm DeepSleep is, what it does, how to use it, and what to expect when you use it once or long-term; then this article is for you. To understand NuCalm DeepSleep (one of six different patented neuroacoustic software journeys that enable you to access one of your five different brain waves) we will share what NuCalm is, and how DeepSleep can help you access your delta brain waves when desired.

What is NuCalm?

NuCalm is patented neuroscience technology capable of changing your mental and physical condition at your command. NuCalm’s neuroacoustic technology accessible through the mobile app includes journeys for each of the five brain wave states. Simply choose the NuCalm journey aligned with your desired brain wave state and follow the journey directions. Some journeys require an eyemask, quality headphones, and your body reclined in a relaxed place while others, like DeepSleep, only a portable speaker.

What does the DeepSleep neuroacoustic software do?

Like all NuCalm journeys, DeepSleep is a patented neuroscience technology that uses complex physics, including a pitch and frequency matrix and non-linear oscillating algorithms to safely deliver signals to the brain that the brain follows - called frequency following response. NuCalm uses music as a distraction for the listener to create an enjoyable experience while the underlying neuroacoustic software presents the brain with signals that gently guide the brain to a desired outcome, like a tuning fork. The DeepSleep journey is not just white noise or sleep sounds.

NuCalm’s DeepSleep journey primes your brain to fall asleep fast and stay asleep all night. DeepSleep accelerates the onset of sleep by guiding your brain wave frequencies to the delta range (.5-4Hz) so you can fall asleep faster. Played ambiently while you sleep, DeepSleep’s oscillating frequency algorithm keeps your brain’s frequency tuned, doing much more than helping you fall asleep or even stay asleep. DeepSleep gives your brain a model of a healthy sleep cycle that many of us have lost. The more you use it, the better it will work in supporting deep, restorative sleep, helping your brain stay tuned for rest and recovery the whole night.

DeepSleep is most effective when used in combination with a regular recovery routine as stress directly relates to sleep quality.

What do I need for a DeepSleep journey?

  • Access to the NuCalm mobile app (there are many subscription options)
  • A portable speaker

What will it feel like during a DeepSleep journey?

Just press play when you want to fall asleep. You will drift off to sleep while listening to the selected journey.

How do I know if it’s working?

After your DeepSleep journey:

  • You will drift off to sleep easier
  • You will stay asleep longer
  • You will fall asleep easier if you wake in the middle of the night
  • You will wake feeling more refreshed

If you monitor your personal data, you will note improved sleep quality (latency, duration in REM and deep sleep stages, fewer wake-ups) over time.

Why are there 50-minute, 8 and 10-hour DeepSleep journey time lengths? What is the difference and the same between them?

The 10-hour, 8-hour, and 50-minute software tracks include the same initial 50-minute neuroscience technology that guides you to delta brain waves for sleep onset. The remaining 9 or 7 hours and 10 minutes (depending upon the session length) do not include the neuroscience technology guidance to delta as it is inconsistent with a healthy sleep architecture (includes cycles of deep sleep, light sleep, and REM). The remaining time in the 10 and 8-hour software tracks will sound similar and feature multiple elements that encourage staying asleep and falling back asleep easily if you wake.

DeepSleep is designed for sleep onset or falling asleep. A healthy sleep architecture includes descending into the deep sleep stage within an hour or so of falling asleep. During this stage, automatic body functions like breathing and heart rate are also very slow and your muscles are relaxed. As the night wears on, you will experience shorter versions of the deep sleep stage and cycle through more of the other stages.

What is the difference between DeepSleep, DeepestSleep, and DeepestSleep+?

  • DeepSleep - powerful, patented physics formula for helping people fall asleep and get good quality sleep
  • DeepestSleep - stronger than DeepSleep by helping you fall back asleep with ease in the night if you wake up (currently only available in the MASTERMIND VAULT)
  • DeepestSleep+ - our strongest sleep science, designed to quiet your mind and ease you into sleep, and then help you fall back asleep with ease in the night if you wake up

DeepSleep protocols

For sleep prep

  • Select an 8 or 10-hour DeepSleep journey while you are getting ready for bed (personal hygiene, reading, etc.). Restart DeepSleep when you are ready to fall asleep for the night.

For sleep onset

  • Select an 8 or 10-hour DeepSleep journey when you are ready to fall asleep for the night. The longer journeys provide audio continuity throughout the night and encourage continued sleep.

You can restart DeepSleep during the evening. However, we do not recommend restarting DeepSleep 3-4 hours before your desired wake-up time as it can cause lethargy and sluggishness.
